Hello,

I am writing a summary about my academic year at SLO. If you are curious as to what I have been up to in studio, college, and what-not, please read on. Of course, this part will be excluded from the final summary I turn in.

I think the hardest thing about this first year in college was balancing all of my classes. I never realized how big of a priority studio would be and how big of an impact it would have on my overall view of college. Studio has truly become college as I know it. I have come to realize that all of my classes, whether they are G.E.s, support courses, or what-not, are all related to my growth. And through studio, being around people late at night in studio, and working through to the mornings, I start to see myself growing and being someone that I never realized I could be. I have the confidence to make something that I draw and I now have the motivation to materialize it. This might have happened simply because I am taking architecture courses and we have shop related assignments. Also, through repetition I may have normalized unfamiliar actions. But I also think that I am very lucky in many respects and just lucky that I feel this way now.

I make it sound like I am obsessed with studio, but I am not. In fact I do not think that I go a much relative to whoever may go there the most. I get most of my work done in the dorms or in a timely manner, but I do not linger much in studio. I only go there when I need to do architecture work, and I think that is a very important lesson that I have learned this year. I think it is because I am beginning to see this differently. Many of the things that I thought plain, dull, and simple prior to going to college are now things that I consider sometimes rich. I see that trees are rich, because I see what we can do with them and they are capable of. I see how we take trees and their forms to understand physics and function. I also see how we can use concrete for so many various functions. (I didn’t know anything about the history of concrete prior to arch 218) And now, I also see how simple forms and shapes can interact with people in so many different ways depending on the person. These insights make me truly appreciate the forms that are naturally given and artificially produced on the planet. I think if I had to summarize Vellum, the Fifth Year Thesis Show, all the fifth year shows I have been to, all of the workshops I have been to, and all of the Hearst Lectures I have been to, I’d have to say that everything is just appreciation and showing people how to appreciate things.

It seems like a lot of designs are going between matte or gloss, 3d or 2d/flat. It’s going back and forth. Maybe a composition of both will do the trick, then we can move on to something else.

Fun fact! Dogs lick the mouths of those they consider higher in rank! So if you lick them back, they are not offended, they just don’t see themselves as higher than you and they are confused! The second dog must be a very loyal dog because he or she literally refuses to be licked back haha! I love dogs.

Our Sense of Humor

So, today I was showing a friend of mine an anime video clip that I thought was funny. And my other friends started blurting out and laughing before what was funny even happened. They already knew what was going to happen. This spoiled it for my other friend, because it tremendously increased his expectations. He didn’t think it was funny almost at the least.

Now, what I actually want to talk about is that my friends from gab and I have a unique sense of humor. We laugh at things so hard and get carried away, even from the mildest things for which I am grateful. Sometimes we even spoil humorous things for each other like blurting out and laughing before something funny even happens, but we understand that it’s funny and how funny it is to the other person when they are trying to show us this thing. We can laugh too and we get carried away.And the best part about it is that we don’t pretend it’s funny but make it our own, and I think by doing this we create something new and truly funny every time. It’s a young boys’ thing for now, but I think there’s something special to how we’ve been laughing all this time. Now, don’t get cocky reading this… =.= Or don’t make me feel embarrassed =_=. God damn it, I’m so embarrassed.

Don’t fixate, but let it sink in. Damn, I love that.
